This coin was struck in the dying days of the Roman Republic. The Civil War between the Populares (led by Julius Caesar) and the Optimates (Rome's conservative aristocratic elite) was raging and Caesar was battling forces loyal to the Optimate faction led by Metallus Scipio in Africa. That year, Caesar destroyed Scipio's at the Battle of Thapsus, Caesar's victory over the remaining Optimate forces in Spain the following year secured his absolute control over Rome until his assasination in 44 B.C. The 365 day Julian Calendar was also introduced in this year, which provided the basis for the later Gregorian calendar used to this day.

The coin featured here shows the conjoined busts mythical twins Castor and Pollux (The Gemini Twins) on the obverse with the legend 'Rufus III Vir', whilst the reverse features the goddess Venus holding a staff and scales, with 'Mn Cordius' in the field.
