Obverse of Salonina
Portrait of Salonina

Reverse of Salnonia Antoninianus
Felicitas

253 - 268 A.D. (As Empress)

Julia Cornelia Salonina was the wife and Empress of Gallienus. Little is known about her other than this. She is thought to have been murdered at the same time as her husband in 268 at Mediolanum (Milan), or else executed shortly afterwards on the orders of the Senate. Given her apparent fate, the presence of 'Felicitas' the Goddess of Good Luck on the reverse of this coin is perhaps quite ironic. In this particular coin, Felicitas is depicted seated. As is often the case for this coin type, the obverse striking is much stronger than that of the reverse.
