Ann Martindale with Santa Ann Martindale - Winner of the Chard Christmas 1998 Prize Draw

Our photograph shows Santa Claus aka Lawrence Chard presenting the "Diamond Necklet" to lucky winner Ann Martindale of Whittle-le-Woods near Preston.

Chard jewellers ran a free competition for Xmas 1998. Entrants placed their entry cards in a special "Santa" mailbox in their showroom. The draw was made at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and the prize delivered personally on Christmas day, accompanied by Santa's elf Duncan Chard.

"One of the entries was from Florida", said Lawrence, "It would have made for an interesting delivery."

"I enjoyed doing the Christmas day delivery, and Ann was thrilled to win. Getting dressed up in the Santa outfit mad me feel slightly self-conscious at first, but I also got fully into the seasonal spirit by donning reindeer underwear. I'm glad Ann didn't ask where the reindeer were, as I'd have felt obliged to show her!"
