Coinage of Sao Tome
Prior to 1977, this former Portuguese colony used the Escudo, based on the Portuguese Escudo and valued at par. In 1977, shortly after being granted independence from Portugal, this currency unit was replaced at par by the Dobra, which was eventually floated. Catastrophically high inflation saw the Dobra devalued to become, in 2009, the least valued currency unit in the world, worth only 17,500 to the US Dollar. The centavo, formerly the sub-unit of the Dobra, has for obvious reasons, fallen into disuse.
Since 2010, following a deal with Portugal, the Dobra has been linked to the Euro in order to ‘guarantee stability’ and attract foreign investment.
