Septimius Severus Obv
Obverse of Silver Denarius of Septimius Severus

Septimius Severus Rev
Silver Denarius of Septimius Severus, Reverse

Septimius Severus 193 - 211 A.D.

The reverse of this denarius features Jupiter seated, with a sceptre and holding victory. It is actually very similar to the image found on the tetradrachms of Alexander the Great, which show Zeus (the Greek equivilent of Jupiter) similarly enthroned and holding a sceptre and a winged creature (albeit a bird instead of Victory). Its difficult to avoid the conclusion that this coins was heavily influenced by those famous coins of the mighty Macedonian, and the intended effect of the Roman Emperor Septimius was to try and associate himself with the glory of the greater man. It also demonstrates that the coins of Alexander the Great were well known to the Romans hundreds of years after Alexander's lifetime, and that they were possibly still in circulation in places. A particularly interesting piece to own for collectors and numismatists specialising in ancient coins.
