Severus Alexander 222 - 235 A.D.
Alexander Severus was the last of the Severan Dynasty. After the disasterous reign of his cousin and predecessor Elagabalus, Alexander's reign was mostly a successful one. Unfortunately, whilst he was a competent and fair peacetime ruler, he was a useless military leader, and the tensions this caused led his assassination by his own troops without any Severan to succeed him. The precedent set by Alexander's murder by soldiers keen to promote one of their own, rather than as an act of desperation against a particular member of the ruling dynasty, precipitated a crisis from which the Roman Empire was not to recover fully from until the reign of Diocletian 50 years later.
