Septimius Severus is a paticularly interesting Emperor from a British point of view. He was in Britain campaigning against the barbarian tribes of Scotland when he died at Eborcum (York) in 211 A.D. Some of his coins would have been struck in Britain at one of the travelling mints that followed the Emperor around on his travels.
The featured coin has been struck on a slightly ragged flan, and has a reverse featuring Mars, the God of War, standing with a spear and shield, holding Victory, surrounded by the legend 'VIRTVS AVG'.
