Obverse of Silver Denarius of Septimius Severus

Septimius Severus Rev
Silver Denarius of Septimius Severus, Reverse

Septimius Severus 193 - 211 A.D.

Septimius Severus is a paticularly interesting Emperor from a British point of view. He was in Britain campaigning against the barbarian tribes of Scotland when he died at Eborcum (York) in 211 A.D. Some of his coins would have been struck in Britain at one of the travelling mints that followed the Emperor around on his travels.

The featured coin has been struck on a slightly ragged flan, and has a reverse featuring Roma seated holding victory in her right hand and surrounded by the legend 'Restitutor Urbis' (Restorer of the City, i.e. Rome).
