One Rand Coins
In 1965, South Africa introduced a 1 Rand coin. From 1965 to 1990 inclusive, these were made of silver, but in 1977, a smaller nickel design was introduced, which was issued concrurrently with the silver coins. The issue of this nickel series also stopped in 1990. A number of silver commemorative designs, and base metal circulation issues were also subsequently released. On this page, unless otherwise stated, we offer the silver versions.

South Afrika - Suid Afrika
On the earlier types of 1 rand, there are two obverse types of each coin, one with an English legend reading "SOUTH AFRICA", and one with an Afrikaans legend "SUID AFRIKA". Perhaps this was an example of segragation or apartheid on coins, not permitting the two languages to mix freely on the same coin! From 1977, with the introduction of the nickel version, both languages were shown on each coin.
