Sri Lanka is situated in the Indian Ocean 18 miles southeast of India, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian Sea. The economy is predmoinantly agricultural with tea, coconut products and rubber being the main exports.
On May 22nd, 1972 Ceylon was declared to be the Republic of Sri Lanka.
Coins
Sri Lanka has a long numismatic history dating back to ancient times. Hoards of Roman coins have even been found here, presumably as the result of trade with India and China, who traded with the Romans for goods taken along the spice route via Parthia and Persia. Domestically produced coinage began in around the early 3rd century B.C. consisting of punch marked and cast coins. We occasionally have small stocks of various Sri Lankan coins and coin sets, which we will list on this page.
