Top Light Brown Diamonds
Those of you who have read our information pages about diamonds, particularly those about colour, will already know that most diamonds are not white or colourless. Most diamonds seen in High Street shops are slightly yellow or brown. This page is about "light brown" and "top light brown" diamonds.

Colour Prejudice
Most of the diamond advertising over the past century has concentrated on quality. While higher clarity is always better, whiter is not always better, rather a matter of personal preference. In the complex interplay between size, cost and other factors, choosing a light brown diamond can be an intelligent choice.
It would be very nice if all our customers could afford £1 million plus for a 10 carat, D-colour, flawless diamond, but it would probably also make for a very boring world as well.

Colour Perception
You will already know that all colours have different preference levels, and of course fashion plays its part too. You probably also know that some some colours are more noticeable than others, for example high-visibility clothing is usually bright yellow. The psychology of colour perception is quite complicated, but one simple fact is relevant to yellow and brown diamonds. Yellow is a much easier colour for the human eye to perceive, and brown is harder to discern. Yellow is a safer colour for cars than brown for this reason. Light brown colour in diamonds is harder to notice than light yellow, and yet the price of light brown diamonds is often lower than that of light yellow. Unless you can afford to make make no compromises when buying a diamond, the it makes good sense to at least look at a wide selection of different diamond colours and qualities before committing yourself.

Bigger Diamond, Higher Clarity, or More Affordable?
As we also explain on our "Compromise" page, by choosing a diamond with a "lower" or different colour, you should be able to get a bigger, better (clarity), or more affordable one.

Natural Fancy Colours
An intense natural brown diamond could be more valuable than a colourless one, and this applies to all colours of diamonds. Some colours such as pink are also rare and desirable in lighter shades. We can tell you more about these too.
