Featured is a didrachm of Trajan, minted at Caesaria, Cappadocia (modern day Turkey). Trajan was considered one of the greatest Roman Emperors and later Christians considered him to be one of the 'Virtuous Pagans'. Trajan's ashes were once interned at the base of his famous column, but were exhumed and reburied in a place lost to history at the behest of Pope Gregory I, who declared that he had interceded on his behalf and claimed that God had appeared to him to announce that Trajan had been rescued from Hell.
