Trebonianus Gallus 251 - 253 A.D.

In many ways typical of the short-lived soldier-emperors of this period, Trebonianus Gallus was proclaimed emperor by his troops after his predecessor Trajan Decius was killed*, and was in turn murdered by his successor, the very short lived Aemilianus. At this point, the coins of the Roman Empire were still struck using reasonably fine silver, and Trebonianus Gallus was one of the last emperors to strike such coins. Under Valerian I, and his son Gallienus who came to the throne that same year, debasement and hyperinflation accelerated with gusto, and the silver content was reduced to almost nothing as Roman authority all but collapsed throughout Europe and the Mediterranean Basin.

*Some ancient sources (most notably the contemporary historian Dexippus) suggest that Trebonianus Gallus had a hand in his death by holding back his army and allowing Decius to be overwhelmed by Goths at the Battle of Abrittus in 251. However, modern historians dispute this version of events on the grounds that Gallus appointed Decius' son Hostillian to the rank of Caesar, and also enjoyed the support of the Roman Army in spite of him allegedly betraying them by allowing many of them to suffer defeat and humiliation at the hands of foreign barbarians.
