A Brief History of American Coins
The first coins used in what is now the United States were imported by colonists from Europe. Locally-produced coins and tokens were issued sporadically, and there was a chronic shortage of coinage throughout the period of British rule in the 13 colonies. Because of the reluctance of the British government to export adequate supplies of coinage to the colonies, due in part to a shortage of coins in Britain itself, Spanish coins circulated alongside £sd issues and were often in more plentiful supply. Because of this, when the US achieved its independence, its new currency (introduced in 1792) was based around the Spanish dollar (8 Reale piece) and not in any way around the coinage of the old British currency system.
The principle mint of the US is the Philadelphia Mint in Pennsylvania, with branch mints in Denver, Colorado and San Fransisco, California. Former Branch mints were also located in Carson City, Nevada and New Orleans, Louisiana. The world's most valuable coin is a US 1933 Double-Eagle ($20), which sold for a record-breaking USD$6.6 million when it was auctioned at Sotheby's in 2002.
