Venezuela
Venezuela was discovered by Columbus in 1498, but it was not until 1567 that Caracas was founded. Venezuela was the home of Simon Bolivar, and was the first of the South American possession to rebel against Spanish rule. Along with Ecuador, Panama and Colombia, Venezuela was part of Gran Colombia until 1830 when it became fully independent. In common with a number of other Latin American countries, Simon Bolivar is recognised as a national hero, and this is reflected in their coins, which are denominated in Bolivars (Bolivares), and his portrait appears frequently on many of their coins as their liberator. We did not realise until we came to write this potted history that Venezuela means "little Venice". We also did not realise that on 13th November 1999 Venezuela changed its name to "Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela"or actually "República Bolivariana de Venezuela".
