Vespasian Tetradrachm

Vespasian was a very well travelled man. He had been a senior officer in the army that conquered Britain under Claudius, he had led the Army that crushed the Jewish Revolt of 66-70 A.D. under Nero, and had been the governor of Africa. At the time of his accession following the overthrow and suicide of Nero, he was still in Judea campaigning against the Jewish rebels. In the ensuing Civil War to secure his throne, Vespasian travelled down to Alexandria in Egypt. Vespasian was therefore quite familiar with the Eastern portion of the Empire for which this Tetradrachm was minted. The letter 'B' on the obverse denotes the fact that the coin was minted in Vespasian's second regnal year (71-72 A.D.).
