Which Euro Coin Set to Choose?

A Bewildering Selection
There is quite a wide choice of Euro coin sets to choose from. With 12 main countries plus 3 minor ones, official mint sets, unofficial sets, proof sets, five of the countries issuing Euro coins dated from 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and German Euro coins from 5 different mints, starter packs and business packs, we reckon there are over 100 different sets available. It can make it difficult to decide which. We also produce a "generic" presentation pack, with 12 national symbols on it, containing a set of 8 Euro coins each showing the reverse or "value" side. Instead of having a set of 8 coins from a specific country, we also produce pan-Euro sets containing a coin from each of the 12 main countries. So far, we produce sets of 12 x 2 Euros, 12 x 1 Euros, 12 x 50 Cents, 12 x 5 Cents, 12 x 2 Cents and 12 x 1 Cents.

Over 272 Different Coins
With 15 countries, of which five produce 4 different dates, and one producing 5 different mintmarks, there are 34 different country / date / mint combinations, for each of 8 different denominations, which equals 272 different possible coins, ignoring proofs, and the new commemorative Euro coin issues. The actual total may be less than this because some countries may not have produced every denomination with every possible different date or mintmark.

Countries & Designs
Each country uses its own national designs on its Euro coins. As might be expected, every country has taken a different approach to the number of different designs it uses on different denominations. Most countries have produced three different designs, one each for the bi-coloured, silver coloured, and copper coloured coins. Some countries have produced better or more imaginative designs than others.
Austria Greece, Italy and San Marino have done a great job, and produced eight different designs, one for each coin value. Finland, France, Germany, Portugal and Spain have each used three different designs; of these we like the French best, and Finland have produced different designs for the two higher valued coins, but the six remaining coins all share the same design. Luxembourg also produced three slightly different designs, the Netherlands has only used two designs, while Belgium and Ireland rather disappointingly have used just one design for all eight coins. Whether this is to avoid confusing the natives, we do not know! We have not yet seen the Monaco designs.
