Following the death of his first cousin once removed Elizabeth I, James VI of Scotland succeeded to the throne of England in 1603, uniting the Kingdoms of England and Scotland under the same crown. This is reflected in the legend on the obverse of his coins, in which he describes himself as King of 'Mag(nus) Brit(tania)' or 'Great Britain'.
