1630-1631 Charles I Hammered Shilling
Featured here is a shilling of Charles I, who famously lost his head over a disagreement with Parliament. This shilling was minted at the Tower of London under the King between 1633 and 1634, and would have circulated in England at the time of the Civil War. The coinage of Charles I is one of the most varied of that of any monarch, save that of our present Queen Elizabeth II, in part due to the chaos caused by the Civil War and the neccessity for both sides to mint coins in field mints all around the country and in cities under siege by either Royalist or Parliamentarian forces.

Obverse
Crowned bust of Charles I, facing left, with XII behind, with the inscription:
CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT FR ET HI REX

Reverse
Oval garnished shield with arms (lion, fleur de lis, harp), C R to side, with the inscription:
CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO
(I reign under the auspice of Christ)
