Charles I Halfcrowns
The coinage of Charles I is one of the most varied coinage of all of Britain's rulers. Largely due to the turbulent events of his reign. Mints were set up in various cities by all sides during the Civil War to strike coinage in Charles I's name. Many of the issues were crudely struck, reflecting the 'field' nature of many of the mints, which had to be semi-mobile in order that they could be dismantled and moved quickly in the event of an enemy army approaching the city they were based in. The 'Siege' issues of Charles I (emergency issues struck in besieged towns and cities) are particularly sought after for their scarcity and historical significance.

Most of coins of Charles I were hammer-struck, but prior to the Civil War, Frenchman Nicholas Briot was employed to strike milled issues between 1631-1639. The sheer variety of the coins of Charles I means that collecting the coins of Charles I would make for an extensive collection in its own right, even if one was to limit it to a particular denomination, such as the half-crown.
