Charles II 1660 - 1685
In the first two years of Charles II's reign, a prolific hammered issue of all coins, including the shilling, was issued, so that the Commonwealth and Protectorate issues that had been struck during the interregnum period could be withdrawn from circulation as quickly as possible.
Following this, in 1663, the striking of coins at the Royal Mint was converted from the hammered process to the milling process permanently. The 1663 issue, was therefore the amongst the first regular milled issues to be struck.
The following is a description of the general type:

Obverse:
Bust of Charles II facing right, wearing a laurel wreath.
The obverse inscription reads:
CARLOLVS II DEI GRATIA

Reverse:
crowned cruciform shields, interlinked C's at angles.

The reverse legend reads:
MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX (date)
