Farthing Token |
|
|
Featured is a 1669 Farthing token from Gloucester. These tokens were issued by merchants and tradesmen in the 17th Century to overcome the the shortage of small change in the England at that time. They usually featured the name and/or the name of the business, with the coat of arms of the issuer's trade on the other side. In theory, they were redeemable in silver or gold by the person issuing them, although some were no doubt more reliable for doing this than others!! These tokens were eventually replaced by regal issues in 1672 and subsequently suppressed.
