William III Sixpence

Numismatically, the sole reign of William III is important, as milled issues from 1696 onwards were struck in very prolific quantities in order to replace the worn and clipped issues which were still in circulation at the time.

This particular specimen (EF/ aEF) is very nicely toned, although as is typical for many early milled issues, the striking on the reverse is quite weak, making the last two numerals in the date difficult to read.

Obverse:
Portrait of William III facing right, wearing laurel wreath 'GULIELMUS III DEI GRA'.

Reverse:
Crowned Cruciform Shields.'REX MAG BR FRA ET HIB'.
