George III 'New Coinage' Shilling

This shilling is one of the first shillings produced due to the Coinage Act of 1816, intended to reform the coinage so that it could be mass-produced cost-effectively and in enough quantity to resolve the coin shortage that had plagued Britain for nearly half a century. The machinery used to steam-mill the coins was provided by Matthew Boulton, of Birmingham, and was installed at the Royal Mint's new premises on Tower Hill, near the Mint's old premises within the Tower of London. These coins were a considerable qualitative improvement over the screw-milled issues of previous years. The size and dimensions of this of the New Coinage Shilling, introduced in 1816 lasted until 1990, although the metal content changed from sterling silver to 0.500 silver in 1920 and finally to cupro-nickel from 1947. In preparation for decimalisation in 1969, was renamed the 5p coin, which was reduced in size in 1990 to the diminutive 5p coin we know today.
