Counterstamped 80 Reis
Up until about 1833, coins of the same denominations where struck according to different standards. However, the government decided to standardise the coinage to the same metal content and size throughout the Empire. The face value of these coins was reduced by half by the countermarks as an attempt to control inflation. The host coin, featuring an 'R' mintmark, was struck in Rio de Janeiro in 1832. The countermark would have been added in 1835.
