William IV Sixpence

Known as the 'Sailor King' William IV had not expected to become King and pursued an active career in the Royal Navy, during which which he served during the American War of Independence as a midshipman and took part in the Battle of Cape St Vincent. Following active service in the Royal Navy, he then became an active member of the House of Lords upon being 'elevated' to the peerage. His elder brothers George IV and Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany predeceased him without leaving legitimate surviving issue, leaving him to inherit the throne in 1830 and reign as King for 7 years prior to the ascension of his niece, Victoria.
