Milled Coins of William IV |

Featured is a Groat of William IV, also known as the 'Sailor King' due to his previous career in the Royal Navy. William had pursued a career as a professional officer in the Navy as he had not been expected to become king. When his elder brother George IV died in 1830 leaving no heirs however, he came to the throne at the age of 64 (the oldest person ever to ascend to the throne in Britain). Although he left no legitimate heirs, his long-standing affair with Dorethea Jordan produced several children from which many notable persons, including the current Prime Minister, David Cameron are descended.
When he died in 1837, his 19 year old niece Victoria succeeded to the throne.
