1847 Victoria Gothic Silver Crown

Crowns featuring the very beautiful gothic style design were struck in only two years. Our specimens are dated MDCCCLXVII for 1847. The only other date issued was 1853, solely as a proof edition. This coin type is therefore a key component for any British type collector. Even circulated examples are scarce and command a premium price. Our specimen, illustrated, is in excellent condition.

It is clear that few of these coins ever circulated, and it is likely that it was not issued with the intention that it should be used as a circulating coin, but as a test piece to gauge public reaction to the design of the proposed gothic design florin which was issued from 1851 to 1887. Because of the larger format of the crown, it is easier to appreciate the engraver's skill.

Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.

Edge

The edge is inscribed in raised lower case gothic style lettering, with roses and crown separators:

(crown) decus (rose) et (rose) tutamen (crown) anno (rose) regni (rose) undecimo

Obverse

Large bust of Queen Victoria, crowned, and with a long hair braid, wearing a dress richly embroidered with roses, shamrocks and thistles. The engraver's initials W.W. for William Wyon, are incuse on the truncation below the shoulder.

The obverse inscription appears in gothic style script, in upper and lower case. This in itself is quite unusual, in that most coin inscriptions are in upper case (capitals) only.

VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR REG F D

Reverse

Crowned cruciform shields bearing three lions passant for England, lion rampant for Scotland, and harp for Ireland. In the angles are roses, a shamrock and a thistle. In the centre, the Order of the Garter, bearing the inscription "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE". All contained within a tressured circular panel.

The reverse design was also by William Wyon, whose initials appear incuse on the circle at either side of the topmost crown.

The reverse legend is also in lower case gothic style script:

TUEATUR UNITA DEUS ANNO DOM MDCCCXLVII
