1853 Victoria Halfpenny
The earliest issues of Victoria's low denomination coinage were substantial copper coins. Nice and chunky to hold individually, but possibly a nuisance to carry around in significant amounts. Nevertheless, these are nice coins for a collector to own, especially in the higher grades.

These coins were issued in these dimensions until 1860, when the metallic composition and size of the half-penny was reduced to those used until decimalisation in 1971.

Obverse
'Young Head' Bust of Queen Victoria (identical to those used on the sovereigns of this period).
VICTORIA DEI GRATIA

Reverse:
The reverse features Britannia facing right, legend reads 'Queen of Britain, Defender of the Faith'. Seated above a shamrock, rose and thistle representing Ireland, England and Scotland respectively. The legend reads:-
BRITANNIAR REG FID DEF
