Brief Italian History
Coins have been used in Italy since ancient times when they were introduced by ancient greek colonists in the South of Italy, some time before the Romans created their own system of currency which was later spread throughout the Roman Empire. The Lira (or Pound) was originally divided into Lira, Solido and Denari (20 Solido and 240 Denari to the Lira, as with the old British £sd system). By the 19th Century, the Lira had been decimalised throughout Italy and the various versions of the Lira unified under the unified Kingdom of Italy. The Lira was abandoned by Italy in 2002 in favour of the Euro.
