Victoria Halfpenny |
|
|
The 'bun-head' style portrait of Queen Victoria used on the half-penny illustrated was unique to the bronze issues of Britain from 1860-1894. Many different varieties and sub-types of these issues exist, and the collection of all the different varieties could form the basis of an extensive collection in its own right. The year this half-penny was issued was also the year in which Sir Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace.
Obverse
Bun Head portrait of Queen Victoria.
VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG: F:D
Reverse:
The reverse features Britannia, seated facing right on the shoreline and holding a trident, with a lighthouse and ship on either side in the background. A 'H' mintmark is visible below the date, indicating that this coin was minted at the famous Heaton Mint in Birmingham, which was often used as a subcontracter by the Royal Mint in order to cope with the sheer demand for bronze coinage which the Royal Mint by itself was not capable of fulfilling at that particular time.
The legend reads:-
HALF PENNY
1874
