Reverse of rare 1932 Chinese Republic 1 Yuan

1932 Chinese Silver 1 Yuan
The 1932 'Junk' dollar was intended to be the first of a new series of dollars (or Yuans) intended for circulation throughout China (replacing the various coins of regional mints throughout the nation), however, this proved to be a one year type, as the design was modified for the following year.
In 1932, fighting broke out between Chinese and Japanese troops in the vicinity of Shanghai, in what was known as the 'January 28 Incident'. The resulting anti-Japanese sentiment led to a reassessment of the design on the reverse of the new Yuan coin, as the 'rising sun' image to the right of the junk was thought to have resembled the Imperial Japanese flag too closely, whilst the flying geese were thought to be reminiscent of the Japanese aircraft that had taken part in bombing raids on Shanghai in that year.
Consequently, only 51,000 of these coins entered circulation before the rest of the mintage of 2,260,000 was melted down to provide bullion for the striking of the modified 1933 design, which was similar, but for the absence of the flying geese and the rising sun.
In 1935, the economic difficulties faced by the Chinese government led to the recall of silver coins and the banning of the private ownership of silver, which would have led to the destruction of even more of these coins.
All these factors would have led to this coin being much rarer than its mintage would suggest.

Obverse
The obverse of this coin features a profile portrait of Sun Yat-Sen, first president of the Chinese Republic.
