1967 Young Laureate Head "Copper" Penny

1967 pennies were issued in the years leading up to decimalisation. Although the decision had been taken in 1966 to decimalise the currency, there was a need to mint pennies in huge quantities before they would be rendered obsolete. Consequently, all pennies minted between 1967 and D-Day were dated 1967 to lessen the impact of hoarding by nostalgic members of the public who were painfully aware that soon the currency they had known from their childhoods would disappear forever. These pennies saw circulation for no more than four years before they were withdrawn. For these reasons, 1967 pennies in uncirculated condition are extremely common.
Although we have described this as a "copper" penny, it is actually made of bronze. All British "copper" coins have been made of bronze since 1860, even surviving decimalisation, until 1992, when they started to be produced in copper plated steel.
Even now, most people refer to our copper-coloured coins as copper, or coppers. This also applies in other countries including Canada and the USA.
