1973 Globtik Tankers Gold Medallion 1973 Commissioning of S.T. Globtik

Description
This large and impressive medallion was issued for the commissioning and maiden voyage of S.T. Globtik, which was the largest ship in the world when it was launched. The mintage is not known, but according to the leaflet accompanying it, was "very limited". The specimen we show is engraved on its edge:
PRESENTED TO LORD ALDINGTON BY RAVI TIKKOO
It seems appropriate that such a large ship such by commemorated by such a large medallion. Curiously, the weight abbreviation shown on the medallion as "DWT" stands for Dead Weight Tonnage, but the same abbreviation is also used to stand for pennyweight; the letter D standing for Denarius, as in £.s.d. For those interested in such matters, the medal itself weighs about 107 pennyweights.

Obverse
The medallion shows, on its obverse, the steam tanker Globtik with a symbolic background of dockyard cranes, with the legends:
TO COMMEMORATE THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF S.T. GLOBTIK TOKYO FEBRUARY 1973
GLOBTIK TANKERS
477,000 DWT

Reverse
A map showing the route of the maiden voyage of the ship, and the legend:
S.T. GLOBTIK TOKYO BUILT BY ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA HEAVY INDUSTRIES AT KIJRE JAPAN 1972
