Known to the ancient Greeks who issued the very first coins, Cyprus was famous for its copper mines, indeed its name in Greek means 'copper'. As a mediterranean island, Cyprus was under the control of many different regimes including Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Franks, Ottoman Turks, and the British. Since 1960 Cyprus has been independent from Britain, but in 1974, the northern part has been under Turkish influence, having declared itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
