The Office of High Sheriff

The role of the High Sheriff dates back to the Saxon times. Originally their primary job was to keep law and order within a county and collect and return and taxes for the king.

Today the job involves supporting both the monarch and the judiciary system as well as lending support and encouragement to local services.

Obverse

The obverse shows a coat of arms of shrievalty by the Royal Mint engraver, Frederick Mogford. The text reads - MILLENNIUM OF THE OFFICE OF HIGH SHERIFF 1992.

Reverse
The reverse is a shield bearing various heraldic devices, presumably symbolising the Royal Mint, with the legend:- ROYAL MINT
