John Harrison

Harrison was born in England in 1693. He was a carpenter, and best known for inventing the marine chronometer. This device enabled people to establish the longitude of ships at sea.

Obverse
The obverse has four circles representing clock faces or dials. In the top of 12 o'clock position is a portrait of John Harrison facing right. In a clockwise "movement", the second dial has a double 12 hour clock face. The third dial appears to be a 24 hour dial, while the fourth dial has two or three hands and appears to mark seconds and / or minutes. The legend reads:-
TERCENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF JOHN HARRISON
1693 - 1993

Reverse
The reverse is a shield bearing various heraldic devices, presumably symbolising the Royal Mint, with the legend:- ROYAL MINT
CENTENARY MEDAL
