New Designs for 2003
The release of the bullion one ounce bullion version of silver Britannia was brought forward in 2003 from August to January. Both gold and silver versions have a new design. This means that there was also a silver Britannia proof set issued this year with all four coin sizes. Silver Britannias were only issued starting in 1997, and are normally only issued in the full size One Ounce version. Only in years when there has been a design change have silver proof sets been issued. The three smaller sized silver Britannias are only issued in these "new design" years, although the 1/10 ounce 20 pence proof coin is also available separately as in the 10 ounce silver proof £2 coin. The two intermediate size coins are only available as part of a complete silver proof set.

Obverse
Fourth Portrait
The obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Her Majesty the Queen with the legal tender value of each coin below the portrait, in use since 1998, as with all British coins, the obverse design changed to the "fourth portrait", showing a more mature likeness of The Queen.
New Reverse Design for 2003
The reverse type for 2003 is new. Britannia is be shown standing, accompanied by a lion, similar to the Una and the Lion reverse used on the very rare 1839 £5 gold coins.
According to the Royal Mint:-
This year's Britannia Gold and Silver Proof and Silver Bullion coins bear an exciting new reverse design, the third image of Britannia by Philip Nathan.
The 2003 design shows Britannia's head wearing a helmet, a traditional attribute of Britannia, and an indication that she is not defenceless. the superimposition of a wave pattern conveys a sense of Britannia's nautical background, an aspect along with Britannia's essential Britishness that Philip Nathan has always been keen to emphasise. There is a unity too in the retention of the crenellated border which has been a feature of Philip Nathan's Britannia designs since the original issue in 1987.
