First UK Platinum Coin
This is the first ever British coin issued in platinum.
It was issued for the centenary of the Entente Cordiale treaty signed by Britain and France in 1904. We already have a full description of the Entente Cordiale crowns elsewhere, so will not repeat it here. It is an impressive coin, although when we first saw it, we must admit to being slightly disappointed, but having photographed it, and handled it, we have to say that platinum often has an understated look about it. The coin is a proof, although we had to read the leaflet accompanying the coin as it is produced with a "reverse proof" finish, whereby the field (the flat background) has a matt finish, and the raised design is polished. These "reverse proof" coins are not generally particularly popular, and we would agree with anybody who thinks that the standard proof configuration of highly polished background with matt or frosted relief is the most aesthetically pleasing. The actual finish on the coin adds to the somewhat understated appearance of the platinum.
In all, we like the coin, and it would make a pleasant and interesting addition to a collection for those who have around £3,000 to spare for a coin containing just over 3 ounces of platinum.
