2005 Churchill Gold Medallion by The Royal Mint
Large (65mm) gold medallion, struck by the British Royal Mint, using almost 10 ounces of 22 carat gold, for the fortieth anniversary of Winston Churchill's death.

The Gold Medallions
A whole rash of commemorative medallions were issued after the death of the great man in 1965, and a further few on the centenary of his birth in 1974. These medallions vary greatly in size and quality. Some are very impressive, being struck in a large size, and with high relief giving great detail.
This medallion by The Royal Mint is unusual in that it is a modern piece, and this gives it a degree of rarity value.

Original Box
The medallion comes complete with original box and certificate

Description
Although this is an impressive medal, we would have preferred to see it made with a matt finish, or with a contrasting matt and polished finish. The all-polished finish, to our mind, is slightly disappointing.

Obverse
Portrait of Churchill, wearing a jacket and bow tie. St. Pauls' Cathedral is shown to his right, with crossed searchlights, as on the commemorative £2 coin also issue in 2005 for the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. The legend reads:
40TH ANNIVERSARY 1965 - 2005
THE END OF THE CHURCHILL ERA
The engraver's initials DC can be seen on his sleeve.

Reverse
A crowd of people, waving Union Flags (Jacks), with two symbolic lions.

Edge
The edge of the medal is plain, except for a hallmark, with GS as the sponsor's mark, and 34 engraved, matching the number on the certificate.
