2006 Maundy Set
On Maundy Thursday 13th April 2006, the Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh attended the Maundy Service at Guildford Cathedral. During the service she distributed Maundy money to 80 men and 80 women, all retired pensioners. Each will have received 80 pence in total, in two purses, one white and one red.
Each year, a number of other coins are distributed to other additional people including officials, so that the total mintage and issued do not add up to the figure which would be suggested by simple arithmetic.
In 2006, proof versions of the Maundy coins were also included in the commemorative Queen's 80th Birthday Collection, "A celebration in silver".
