Ivan Mestrovic (Mestrovic')
Ivan Mestroviæ studied at the Vienna Academy of Art (1901 - 1906) when the Vienna Secession movement was in full swing. He was a sculptor, an architect, a writer and a participant in important political events. From 1923 to 1942, Mestroviæ was Dean of the Zagreb Academy of Arts. On the recommendation of W.B. Yeats, the Chairman of the Design Committee for the first coinage of the Irish Free State (later, the Republic of Ireland), he was one of five artists invited to submit a design for this coinage. In 1947, he moved to the United States, where he took up a teaching post at Syracuse University in New York State and then at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana, where he died in 1962.

Girl with Harp
"This beautiful Silver Proof €15 coin celebrates the 80th anniversary of the original coin design 'Girl with Harp' which was gifted to the Irish State by Ivan Mestrovic in 1927. This design was submitted by the artist as an entry in the competition for the design of the 1928 Irish Free State coinage. Unfortunately, because of difficulty contacting him - he was in the United States - his design arrived too late for consideration. The Chairman of the Design Committee, William Butler Yeats, subsequently wrote "He made one magnificent design and, on discovering that the date had passed, gave it to the Irish Free State with great generosity". It has been used as the seal of the Central Bank since 1965.

Launch Comments
Ivan Mestroviæ submitted a design for the first coinage of the Irish Free State in 1927, on the recommendation of W.B Yeats. He was in the United States and, due to the communication challenges of the time, his design arrived too late for consideration. Yeats later wrote that, when the letter finally arrived, Mestroviæ "made one magnificent design and, on discovering that the date had passed, gave it to the Irish Free State with great generosity".
The design was adopted by the Central Bank as its official seal in 1965, and is now finally reproduced on a coin.
Speaking at the launch, Central Bank Governor John Hurley said: "This is the first time that the Central Bank has produced a joint coin issue, and I am particularly delighted that the Croatian National Bank has been our partner in this project. Ireland and Croatia have a good deal in common, we share excellent relations in business, financial and political circles and Ireland firmly supports Croatia's objective to become a member of the EU."
In his speech, Croatian Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Veselko Grubisic, emphasised Croatia's appreciation for the Irish Government's support to Croatia on its road to the full membership of the European Union. He also congratulated the Central Bank and the Croatian National Bank on a successful completion of this unique project.

Ceithre Scór Bliain chun an Bonn seo a tháirgeadh
Sheol an Banc Ceannais bonn nua do bhailitheoirí inniu chun comóradh a dhéanamh ar dhearadh a cuireadh isteach ceithre scór bliain ó shin. Táirgeadh an €15 bonn seo i gcomhoibriú le Banc Náisiúnta na Cróite agus déanann sé comóradh ar obair an dealbhóra Chrótaigh, Ivan Mestroviæ. Beidh an bonn airgid profa seo ar díol ón Déardaoin seo chugainn, 15 Feabhra ar chostas €40 an bonn. San am céanna eiseoidh Banc Náisiúnta na Cróite bonn airgid profa 150 Kuna atá beagnach comhionann leis.
Chuir Ivan Mestroviæ dearadh isteach don chéad mhonaíocht de chuid an tSaorstáit sa bhliain 1927, ar mholadh ó W.B. Yeats. Bhí sé sna Stáit Aontaithe agus mar gheall ar dheacrachtaí cumarsáide na linne sin, bhí sé ró-dhéanach nuair a fuarthas an dearadh chun é a chur san áireamh. Scríobh Yeats níos déanaí go ndearna Mestroviæ "dearadh iontach amháin agus, tar éis dó a fháil amach go raibh an spriocdháta imithe thart, bhí sé an-fhlaithiúl agus bhronn sé ar an Saorstát é". Ghlac an Banc Ceannais leis an dearadh mar shéala oifigiúil sa bhliain 1965 agus anois, faoi dheireadh, tá sé á atáirgeadh ar bhonn.
Ag labhairt dó ag an seoladh, dúirt Gobharnóir an Bhainc Ceannais, John Hurley: "Seo an chéad uair a d'eisigh an Banc Ceannais bonn i gcomhpáirt agus tá an-áthas orm go raibh Banc Ceannais na Cróite mar comhpháirtí againn sa tionscadal seo. Tá cuid mhaith i gcoiteannas ag Éirinn agus ag an gCróit - tá caidreamh an-mhaith idir lucht ghnó, lucht airgeadais and polaiteoirí sa dá thír agus ta Éire ag tacú go láidir le haidhm na Cróite ballraíocht den AE a bhaint amach."
Ina óráid, chuir Ambasadóir na Cróite chun na hÉireann, A Oirirceas Veselko Grubisic, i bhfios go láidir go raibh an Chróit an-bhuíoch do Rialtas na hÉireann as tacú leis an gCróit agus í ar a slí chun ballraíocht iomlán san Aontas Eorpach a bhaint amach. Thréaslaigh sé freisin leis an mBanc Ceannais agus le Banc Náisiúnta na Cróite as an tionscadal uathúil seo a thabhairt chun críche go rathúil.
Cuirfear eisiúint theoranta de 8,000 de na boinn Éireannacha ar díol. Is féidir foirm ordaithe oifigiúil a fháil ón mBanc Ceannais trí glaoch ar 1890 307 607 nó ón láithreán gréasáin, www.centralbank.ie. Beidh boscra dúbailte ina mbeidh an bonn Éireannach agus an bonn Crótach ar díol ag Aonach Bonn Idirnáisiúnta na hÉireann i gCumann Ríoga Bhaile Átha Cliath ar 17 agus 18 Feabhra 2007.
· Rinne Ivan Mestroviæ staidéar ag Acadamh Ealaíon Vín (1901 - 1906) nuair a bhí an ghluaiseacht ar a dtugtar an Wiener Secession faoi lán seoil. Bhí sé ina dhealbhóir, ina ailtire, ina scríbhneoir agus ghlac sé páirt in imeachtaí polaitiúla tábhachtacha. Ó 1923 go 1942, bhí Mestroviæ ina Dhéan ar Acadamh Ealaíon Ságrab. Ar mholadh ó W.B. Yeats, Cathaoirleach an Choiste Deartha do chéad mhonaíocht Saorstát Éireann (níos déanaí, Poblacht na hÉireann), bhí sé ar dhuine de chúigear ealaíontóir a fuair cuireadh chun dearadh a chur isteach don mhonaíocht seo. I 1947, d'aistrigh sé go dtí na Stáit Aontaithe, áit a ndeachaigh sé i mbun poist mar mhúinteoir in Ollscoil Syracuse i Stát Nua Eabhrach agus ansin in Ollscoil Notre Dame i South Bend, Indiana, áit a bhfuair sé bás i 1962.
