World Youth Day & The Papal Visit
Hundreds of thousands of participants will celebrate the 23rd World Youth Day in Sydney in July 2008 with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, who is visiting Australia for the first time. It is celebrated on a diocesan level annually, and at a week long international level every two to three years. The first World Youth Day was held in Rome in 1986 on Palm Sunday. Each year since, World Youth Day has been celebrated at a Diocesan level on Palm Sunday.

This year's event takes place between 15th July - 20th July. Each World Youth Day has a theme with this year's theme received from Pope Benedict XVI as "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses." Acts 1:8

The limited mintage coins each depict a Vatican-approved image of The Pope, the official WYDSYD08 logo and the inscription 'World Youth Day Sydney 2008' on the reverse.
