The Prince of Wales 60th Birthday Crown Presentation Folder
The commemorative crown, produced in honour of the 60th birthday of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, has been struck in cupronickel to Brilliant Uncirculated standard. Each £5 coin, with its magnificent portrait of Prince Charles on the reverse and the Queen's effigy on the obverse, both by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, is presented in a specially designed folder reflecting the life and work of the Prince.

The Prince of Wales 60th Birthday £5 Coin
Born at Buckingham Palace on 14 November 1948 Prince Charles Philip Arthur George was the first son of Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen declared her eldest son and heir apparent Prince of Wales in 1958 and in 1969 his Investiture took place at Caernarfon Castle. In 2008 His Royal Highness will be celebrating his 60th birthday and in his honour the Royal Mint is striking a special commemorative crown.
The beautifully composed portrait of Prince Charles is the work of esteemed artist Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS whose effigy of the Queen has been in use on British coins since 1998. Following a number of private sittings and working from specially commissioned photographs the artist was able to present the final result that has been approved by both Prince Charles and the Queen. The inscription surrounding the portrait includes the words ICH DIEN, which means 'I serve', and is taken from the Badge of the Prince of Wales. The celebratory year dates of 1948 and 2008 also appear, together with his royal title THE PRINCE OF WALES.

2008 Crown £5 for £5
Each year, both the Royal Mint, Westminster Collections, the so-called London Mint Office and others, offer a loss-leader of a £5 crown for £5, post free. This is to get you onto their mailing lists, and into their clutches, usually so they can market their more profitable items at you. Here at Chard, we don't believe in this type of aggressive marketing, and some years back, we stopped offering the ordinary circulation crowns because we recieved too may complaints about the quality of their finish, even though this is a factor which is beyond our control.
We noticed the Royal Mint's offer which is restricted to one coin per household

The Royal Mint has received approval to issue an historic new British coin on the occasion of The Queen's Diamond Wedding. The £5 coin will be available for one year only and is sure to be a real collector's item. As we are expecting unprecedented demand we are issuing a limit of one per household and have introduced a special application procedure to allow you to order your coin in advance. Don't miss your chance to be amongst the first to own one for no more than the face value of £5. The Queen's Diamond Wedding £5 coin will be sent direct from the Royal Mint in 2008, in time to celebrate The Queen's 80th birthday on 21st April.

British Platinum Piedfort Crowns
Starting in 2004, the Royal Mint has issued platinum piedfort proof crowns. These are naturally very expensive. We can usually supply them new to order if required, but we prefer to source lower priced ones from the secondary market. Please contact us if you are interested.

Platinum Bullion Coins
Platinum coins are subject to VAT in the UK, so we have not until recently offered new platinum bullion coins, however, we can now obtain and supply them to special order. If demand is sufficiently high, we will start to carry them in stock.
