The coins commemorate the start of the Chinese precious metal coin program in 1979.

China started issuing one ounce silver bullion coins with a panda design in 1983 using silver with a purity of 99.9%.
The concept of the one ounce bullion coin was to provide an easy way to purchase convenient small quantities of bullion silver in the form of coins.
Additionally, the new one ounce coins, are an attractive design, made to appeal to collectors.
The denomination, or face value, is ten Yuan.

Obverse
The obverse of the panda coins features the very beautiful Temple of Heaven building in Beijing.

Reverse
Most years the panda coin features a different panda design, making these a very interesting and collectable coin. The 2009 coin features two pandas sat down with one eating a bamboo shoot, then there is a ring around the edge with the text: "30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ISSUANCE OF THE CHINESE MODERN PRECIOUS METAL COMMEMORATIVE COINS".
