2012 25 Cent Prehistoric Creatures Coin

The Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai dinosaur coin is the first in a 4-coin Prehistoric Creature glow-in-the-dark (photo-luminescent) series from the Royal Canadian Mint. They state that glow-in-the-dark is a mint first, as far as we know it is actually a world first. It is certainly the first glow-in-the-dark coin we have ever seen.

According to the certificate:
"This unique coloured cupronickel coin has a diameter of 35 millimetres and includes an unusual photo-luminescent feature. Designed by artist Julius Csotonyi, the stunning painted coin illustrates paleaeontologists' rendition of what Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai probably looked like - and when the coin is removed from natural light, the prehistoric creature's skeleton is revealed. The scientific accuracy of the depiction was verified by palaentologists of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt"

Glow-in-the-dark Coins

At Chard, we don't usually rate novelty coins. They are often quite crudely made, over-marketed and over-priced. However, we were quite excited to see this coin. The depiction of the dinosaur is detailed enough to please most dinosaur enthusiasts and the glow-in-the-dark feature is unique enough to bring out the child in everyone!
We managed to fit six members of staff in a small cupboard under the stairs and we were all really pleased with the effects.

We're looking forward to the rest of the series

Release Date

We first found out about this coin in April 2012 but according to the Royal Canadian Mint they are not supplying them until Hallowe'en 2012. We are not sure if this is the first release but we received ours in to stock on 2nd October 2012. We believe there were problems with production, which was bound to be complicated. Our blog post from 10th April 2012 argues whether they really have a place in numismatics.
