In 2013, The Royal Mint will issue a £5 crown to celebrate the birth of the Royal baby to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate. Commemorative Crowns are issued almost every year, with a unique design for each. Unlike most designs this St George and the Dragon coin will only be available in silver proof.

Obverse

The obverse reverts back to the fourth portrait of the Queen designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, and introduced in 1998.

Reverse

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon, "one of the most famous and respected coin designs in the world" and last seen on a crown in 1951 for the Festival of Britain.

Availability

We originally thought that we would be able to stock these coins at a discount on The Royal Mint's price but unfortunately things have changed dramatically just ten days after the birth of Prince George.

We have written a blog post about how this has happened which can be read on our main domain www.chards.co.uk but to cut a long story short The Royal Mint originally agreed to supply wholesalers and then in a disappointing u-turn they changed their mind and decided not to supply the coins to distributors and wholesalers.

We are not sure whether this a sign of things to come or a one-off but please rest assured that we will continue to offer as many as coins as we can at competitive prices.
