Certificate of 2014 Scottish Ryals Pattern Coin Set |
Scotland was orginally an independent country up until 1603, when James VI (a Scottish member of Royalty) was next in line to the thrown to be King of England and Ireland.
In 1707 the countries were united under The Act of Union to make Kingdom of Great Britain and the later The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland.
The proposed new currency consists of the Scots Pence to five Ryal. The pattern set shown here is one of 20,000 produced. The new currency has been proposed to make sure Scotland stays truly independent if enough people vote "yes" in the September referendum.
This was the currency in use at the time James VI became King of England and Ireland. The coins from a distance share similarities to the Euro coins, but when examined up close, each of the coins currently show a coat of arms symbolising Scotland on the reverse.
On the obverse of each coin shows Scotlands most loved public figures such as William Wallace and Robert Burns. However if Scotland do reach their independence the coins designs may differ.
Scotland Voted: NO
On 18th September 2014, Scotland held their referendum and voted No, with a majority of 55.30%.
Although this now means the debate surrounding currency is not needed, it has been a historic event, with 84.59% of the eligible electorate exercising their right to vote.
