Perth Mint 2015 Bullion Coin Program

Design

The design on the koala coins changes each year, making them appealing to both collectors and investors. The 2015 coin features a koala sitting in a tree, with an Australian bush landscape in the background.

Matte Finish

We have noticed a difference in the finish on the larger koalas this year. The one kilo and the ten ounce coins both have a matte finish, like that used on the Australian crocodile coin. The half ounce and one ounce coins still have a proof-like finish which we have come to expect from the Perth Mint.

Koalas

Whilst koalas are often referred to as 'koala bears', they are in fact marsupials. Their young are born undedeveloped and mature within the safety of their mothers pouch. Their correct name is simply 'koalas'.

Although they have an image of being cute and cuddly, as with most wild animals, koalas can be fierce if disturbed or provoked.

One Ounce Silver Bullion Coins

The Perth Mint issued their first bullion coin - the Kookaburra - in 1990. In 2007, the Perth Mint decided to add to their bullion collection, by introducing the silver koalas.

Initially they were only produced in a one ounce version. In 2012 the Perth Mint added three new sizes (half ounce, ten ounce and one kilo) due to their popularity.

"Mint-to-Order"

This year the Perth Mint are producing all sizes of koalas on a "mint-to-order" basis. Once production closes at the end of 2015, they will announce each of the different sizes official mintage figures.
