The Battle of Waterloo took place on Sunday 18th June, 1815. It started at 11am, 2 hours later than intended, as the ground had been too damp from the previous night's bad weather.
Napoleon led the French troops to battle. The Prussian and Anglo armies worked as an allied force, and were led by General Blücher and the Duke of Wellington respectively.
After hours of fighting (most of it was fought in close combat) and 41,000 casualties, Napoleon was defeated and the battle brought over 20 years of conflict to an end
The design on the reverse of the coin depicts the triumphant handshake between the Duke of Wellington and General Blücher. Designed by sculptor, artist and illustrator, David Lawrence, the coin captures the spirit of camaraderie.
The obverse of the uncirculated coin shows the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of the Queen.
The proof version of the coin features the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark.
The edge inscription reads, "THE NEAREST RUN THING YOU EVER SAW", a quote from the Duke of Wellington and is about how close the battle was.

* With extortionate issue prices we won't be stocking these coins as we do not believe it represents value for money.
We think the silver proof piedforts, gold plated silver proof and platinum piedfort too expensive to make them a worthwhile purchase. If, however, you would like to purchase quantities of these coins, i.e. 10 or more please contact us as we may still be able to source them at considerable discount compared to the Royal Mint.
We play an active part in the secondary market for many platinum, gold and silver products, including commemorative crowns so we would be more than happy to purchase a 2013 (or any other date) crown from you. This obviously means that we may at some point have one for sale, so if you would like to telephone us and place an order we would hope to fulfil it with time.
For current pricing on the gold proof versions of any of the Five Pound Crowns, from 1990 onwards, please use the £5 Gold Coins pages of our "Tax Free Gold" website.
Starting in 2004, the Royal Mint has issued platinum piedfort proof crowns. These are naturally very expensive. We can usually supply them new to order if required, but we prefer to source lower priced ones from the secondary market. Please contact us if you are interested.
